Abstract of Rick Schifferstein's talk
Different designs evoke different experiences. You can enjoy the fragrance of freshly washed laundry, you may feel challenged by an online game, or you can be excited by driving a fancy sports car. Any product will have some experiential effect on the user, whether the designer intended this effect or not. These experiences are important: They influence purchase decisions, usage behaviour, and the degree to which the user enjoys using or owning the product. Hence, it is commercially interesting to design products that evoke specific experiences.
Experience-driven design involves at least two important challenges. The first is to determine what experience to aim for, and the second is to design something that is expected to evoke that experience. To answer these questions, you will need to acquire a thorough understanding of the intended user and the world he or she lives in. In addition, you need insight in the responses that are evoked by various design elements.
In his presentation, Rick Schifferstein will clarify the experience-driven design approach developed at Delft University and Technology, illustrated by several projects performed with this approach.

Rick (H.N.J.) Schifferstein is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering of Delft University of Technology. His topics of interest include (multi)sensory perception, consumer experience, and experience-driven innovation. He contributed to more than 60 papers in international scientific journals, including Acta Psychologica, Marketing Letters, Chemical Senses, International Journal of Design, and Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance. He is co-editor of the books Food, People and Society (2001; Springer), Product Experience (2008; Elsevier), and From Floating Wheelchairs to Mobile Car Parks (2011; Eleven International). With his company Studio ZIN, he provides personal coaching and creative workshops that stimulate the personal growth and unleash the creative powers of team members.

Kaisa Väänänen-Vainio-Mattila is a full professor of usability and user experience in Tampere University of Technology, where she’s leading the unit of Human-Centered Technology (IHTE). Kaisa has 20 years of experience in human-centered design and user experience research, both in academia and industry, including over 10 years with Nokia Inc. In year 2011 Kaisa was a part-time visiting professor at Mobile Life Centre @ Stockholm University, where she was studying embodied interaction and mobile user experience. Kaisa is an editor for Interacting with Computers journal and she is also frequently acting in programme committees of HCI related conferences, especially in MobileHCI and CHI. In 2012 Kaisa is the technical chair of Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia (MUM'12), general chair of EuroHaptics conference and Special Interest Group chair in CHI’12.

Turkka Keinonen is a professor of industrial design, vice head of Department of Design and head of Design Connections Doctoral Program at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Turkka has a Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (1998). He has worked for Finnish design consultancies, been a principal research scientist at Nokia Research Center and worked as a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore. Keinonen’s publications include One-dimensional usability (1998), Mobile Usability - How Nokia Changed the Face of the Mobile Phone, (McGraw-Hill 2003), Product Concept Design - A review of the Conceptual Design of Products in Industry (Springer 2006), and about 100 articles, conference papers and patents.

Janne Pitkänen is the founder and CEO at Adusso Ltd. His background is in industrial engineering and he has gained experience in the usability field at Namahn, a Human-Centered Design consultancy in Belgium. During recent years, Janne has made research and development
with his colleagues on a novel solution for usability studies. This is called user triggered usability testing, and for this purpose a concept of usability black box has been constructed. The concept is well in tune with the needs of Experience-Driven Design and agile development practices.

Special thanks to TEKES/FIMECC project UXUS (Usability and User Experience in Complex Systems) for hosting Dr. Schifferstein.
